Dr. Vernon and Dr. Westman have developed educational modules about the importance of healthy metabolic management. IMS is offering these modules to health care professionals and will soon be announcing the schedule for this spring.
These modules include:
- 14 weeks of live web-based instruction from Dr. Vernon and/or Dr. Westman
- Powerpoint presentations containing extensive research and clinical experience
- bibliographies and links to the references for each presentation
- A question and answer time with Dr. Westman and/or Dr. Vernon following each presentation.
- CME credit
The outline for the 14 sessions breaks down as follows:
(The Problem)
February 16, 2010 - Epidemics of Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and Metabolic Syndrome
February 23, 2010 - Pathophysiology of Glucose Intolerance, Metabolic Syndrome, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
(Nutritional Background)
March 2, 2010 - Basics of Nutrition: What the Body Really Needs
March 9, 2010 - Science of Dietary Carbohydrate, Glucose and Insulin
(What is Carbohydrate-restriction?)
March 16, 2010 - Physiology of Carbohydrate Restriction
March 23, 2010 - Ketones
March 30, 2010 - Clinical Effects of Carbohydrate Restriction
(Low-Carb Diet Research)
April 6, 2010 - Low-carb Diet Research 1: Low-carb and Low-fat Diets
April 13, 2010 - Low-carb Diet Research 2: Beyond Weight Loss
(How to use Carbohydrate-restriction)
April 20, 2010 - Clinical Implementation of Carbohydrate Restriction: Getting Started
April 27, 2010 - Clinical Implementation of Carbohydrate Restriction: Medical Management
(General Principles)
May 4, 2010 - Behavioral Tools for Lifestyle Modification
May 11, 2010 - Reimbursement Issues
May 18, 2010 - Pediatric Obesity Evaluation and Treatment
The sessions are sequential and build upon one another. You will need to go through all 14 to obtain the maximum benefit of the training. However, if you're only interested in one or two of the sessions, you're welcome to sign up for them on an individual basis. The sessions are $250 each when you register for all 14 ($3,500). They are $300 each if you only select specific ones.
You can sign up for the modules here or email jeff@myimsonline.com if you have any questions.
Lowell I Gerber MS, MD, FACC reflects on his experience with the IMS modules:
Gary Taubes, Mary Vernon MD and Eric Westman MD have developed a unique program to teach the history, science and clinical perspectives of the biochemistry of metabolism and nutrition, specifically as it relates to dietary carbohydrate, glucose and insulin and the pathophysiology of glucose intolerance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The physiology of carbohydrate restriction is explained clearly, the measured clinical effects are described, and the outcomes of carbohydrate restricted diets are compared to other dietary strategies. The program is very practical covering all aspects of implementing a carbohydrate restricted diet, including management of common co-morbidities and medications. Even topics such as coding, documentation, and billing were covered so that I could apply the information in my own practice.
The course is organized so that it flows smoothly from the basic introduction to the epidemiology of obesity to the details of the advanced topics of biochemistry, metabolism and analysis of research. Their personal experience in the field is reflected in their mentoring and style of teaching which was a pleasure to experience. I looked forward to each teaching session with enthusiasm. It is with such enthusiasm that I recommend this educational program to clinicians and health care providers who desire to understand nutrition as it pertains to the metabolic syndrome, obesity, and diabetes with the intent to apply it in their practice, or to teach it to others.
