Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Eric Westman responds to Frequently asked Questions about Carbohydrate Restriction

How does it work?  By restricting the carbohydrates in the diet, your body goes into a "fat burning" mode.  As a result, you also burn your own body fat.

What are the risks?  Minimal, if any.  Generally speaking, there are only benefits from healthy eating.  If you are taking medication, then there is a risk of the medicines becoming too strong -- and that's why you want to work with a doctor who understands this approach.

Are there side effects?  At first there might be headache or fatigue as you adjust for a few days or a week.  After that the main side effects are mild constipation and muscle cramps which are prevented by eating or drinking salt and water, often in the form of bouillon.

In what ways will it affect my body?  You will be provided the excellent nutrition that your body needs.

If it is so effective, why don't more doctors recommend it?  There is a widespread lack of knowledge about nutrition amongst doctors.  That's why IMS started - to train doctors and other health care providers about nutrition.

What foods should I avoid?  Basically, we teach people to avoid sugar and starch in the diet.  Because starch is digested to sugar, it has to go.

How many carbohydrates can I have?  At first, we teach people to stay under 20 grams of carbohydrate per day.  This is increased over time as people reach their goal.

How are net carbs calculated?  Total carb grams - fiber = net carb grams.

What are sugar alcohols?  Non-caloric sweeteners.

Can I have caffeine?  Yes, 2-3 servings a day if desired.

How much water should I drink?  As thirst dictates - most people drink 6-8 glasses per day.

What foods can I eat?  Just about every kind of meat and seafood, dairy products (cheese, eggs and cream), leafy greens in salads, and non-starchy vegetables.

Do I need to take supplements?  We recommend a multivitamin without iron, and a 1000 mg of fish oil/day.

Will I get enough fiber?  Yes

What is ketosis?  A sign of fat-burning.
